YouScience Marketplace matches up students with potential employers

An innovative aptitude and career discovery tool has created a way to connect local students with businesses that employ workers with their skills and talents.

YouScience, a state-funded interest and aptitude assessment taken by students in Bartow County and Cartersville City schools, matches teens with education pathways and career options that best fit their talents or that they may not have ever considered, and the Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce wants to help facilitate that process.

The organization is hosting Explore YouScience Talent Marketplace Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m. at Georgia Highlands College’s Cartersville campus at 5441 Highway 20. Breakfast and networking will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the event at 8:30 a.m.

During the free program, employers will learn how to register with YouScience so students whose abilities and skills match their company’s needs will be able to see the company’s online profile.

“We believe YouScience is a great resource and platform for assisting local talent to become more aware and better understand businesses and career opportunities in the community,” said Matthew Thomas, workforce development director for the chamber. “High school students in Bartow County and Cartersville City schools take the YouScience assessment, and now, for the first time, employers are allowed to register on the YouScience system, allowing our industries to become more visible to students and create connections.”
Thomas said the assessment uses an algorithm that matches individuals with appropriate employers and “further allows students to explore careers that best fit their aptitudes and interests.”
“We want them to be able to see opportunities available to them locally, which is why we’re inviting employers to create a profile and join us at this event to learn even more about optimizing the tool,” he said.
Rich Thompson, YouScience’s lead employer engagement strategist for Georgia, will be on hand to share more details about the registration process with business leaders.
“Because the employer portal is still new, Mr. Thompson will share information about the YouScience Talent Marketplace’s features, greater details about the platform itself and how employers can optimize the portal,” Thomas said.
He also said the chamber already has had a variety of companies register for the event, “but we still want more.”
“I spoke with a local hotel manager just yesterday who shared that they have created a profile,” he said. “It’s wonderful to see such engagement already happening for existing businesses.”

The event, hopefully, will help businesses be able to fill job vacancies they have currently as well as in the future.

“We hope to inform employers, regardless of company size or industry sector, about the YouScience Talent Marketplace and how they can utilize it to enhance their visibility to students and find future team members,” Thomas said. “It will allow students to consider careers at companies they never would have thought of before, right here in Bartow County.”

Thomas also said the chamber encourages employers “not to overlook our Cartersville City and Bartow County high schools when looking for talent.”

“The YouScience platform and the YouScience Talent Marketplace can be effective tools for identifying right-fit students for everything from internships, apprenticeships, work-based learning or eventually full-time careers,” he said.
