Challenge

Granite School District needed to improve how students progressed through CTE pathways and ensure they graduated with clear, actionable plans. Many students, particularly seniors, lacked direction, and course-taking patterns were not consistently aligned to student goals, leading to inefficiencies in outcomes like completion, retention, and postsecondary success.

Solution

The district implemented an “intentional scheduling” model using YouScience Aptitude & Career Discovery data to guide student pathways. They improved outcomes by:

  • Aligning course selection to student aptitudes and postsecondary goals
  • Structuring pathways to ensure students progress toward completion
  • Matching academic coursework (e.g., math and science) to career-aligned pathways

This approach shifted planning from reactive course selection to proactive, data-informed pathway design.

Results

  • Increased pathway completion:
    • 152% growth in CTE enrollment and participation
    • 142% growth in CTE concentrators* from 2022 to 2024
    • 113% growth in CTE completers* from 2022 to 2024
  • Improved student retention and success:
    • Higher student retention rates in pathways and postsecondary programs
    • Increased pass rates in concurrent enrollment courses
  • Expanded equitable outcomes:
    • Higher number of students earning Gen Ed Certificates of Completion
    • 33% reduction in high school drop out and failure rates from 2021 to 2025
    • Improved alignment between program participation and overall student demographics

*Note: In Utah, a CTE Concentrator is a student who has completed specific, in-depth coursework (often 1.5–2.0 credits, including a concentrator course) in a Career Pathway. A CTE Completer is a student who has finished the entire sequence of a pathway, earning at least 3.0 credits in that same area, often earning a medallion for graduation.

“YouScience is about identifying those aptitudes, engaging students in conversations about their interests, and then attaching those to specific pathways. To gain administrative support, we realized we needed concrete outcomes rather than just promises of preparation. By tracking our CTE concentrator and CTE completer data from 2022 to 2024, we were able to provide the hard numbers that demonstrate our growth.”
