Measuring interests: the RIASEC model
Psychologists have long known that people’s work-related interests can be grouped into six broad types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC). The RIASEC model, developed through decades of research, predicts important outcomes such as the careers people choose, their job satisfaction, and even job performance.
YouScience measures interests using the Interest Profiler Short Form (IPSF), created by psychologists for the U.S. Department of Labor’s O*NET system. This scientifically validated tool reliably maps your preferences across the RIASEC dimensions, ensuring your results are both consistent and meaningful.
Measuring aptitudes: uncovering natural abilities
While interests reveal what you like, aptitudes uncover what you’re naturally good at. YouScience uses a computerized variation of the Ball Aptitude Battery (BAB) to evaluate key mental abilities. These aptitudes, condensed from decades of studies, show where you can learn and perform more easily, giving you a clear picture of the skills that set you apart.
The science of measurement: reliability and validity
You can’t “see” interests or aptitudes the way you can measure height or weight. That’s why YouScience relies on psychometrics, the science of measuring psychological attributes. Our assessments meet high standards of reliability (consistent results over time) and validity (accurately predicting future performance and satisfaction). In other words, your results reflect the real you and provide trustworthy guidance for career decisions.
Matching you to careers
After measuring your interests and aptitudes, our platform uses AI-powered algorithms to compare your unique profile to more than 600 high-potential careers identified in O*NET. The result is a personalized list of best-fit careers with “fit” scores based on aptitudes, interests, and overall compatibility. And because the job market evolves, we continually refine our matching process to keep your recommendations current.
